This first translation of the entire Bible, which was commanded by King Christian III, stands as a manument of the Danish Reformation, and the influence it exercised, both at that time and subsequently, cannot be overemphasized. To make it as perfect as possible, nothing was spared: The best Danish theologians worked on the translation and in 1548 the printing of this magnificent work could finally be implemented. As the king wanted this to take place in Copenhagen, he summoned the German book printer Ludwig Dietz from Rostock – as the only Danish book printer in Copenhagen at the time, Hans Vingaard, didn't have the facilities to undertake this great task. King Christian III's Bible was printed in 3000 copies and was copied from the Lübeck 1534 edition of Luther's German Bible. The many woodcut illustrations was made by Erhard Altdorffer. The original price of the book was five rixdollars for a bound copy – the same as the price of an ox. Today, around 40 copies are known to be in public collections. (Thesaurus #75, LN #15).
Christian III's Bible is the first folio bible of Denmark and Norway, and is famous for its numerous woodcuts by Altdorffer.
