The painting shows a charming interior with the Copenhagen watchmaker Erich Groot smoking a long pipe and reading the newspaper, while his diligent wife is sitting with her knitwear. Between them is seen a late empire table.

Erich Grott finished his test piece in 1831 and established a watchmaker's shop in Bredgade 7 in Copenhagen.

The genre painting was popular in the early 19th century. Among the best known painters of this genre are Wilhelm Bendz and Emil Bærentzen.
