Greek artist Yannis Gaïtis (1923 – 1984) became acquainted with both cubism and surrealism as a young man. He exhibited in Paris alongside artists such as Picasso, Max Ernst and César, and later also with Dali, Fontana, Klein, Matta and Tinguely. Gaïtis was a mischievous, lively person with an interest in politics and social affairs, and his funny men with hats on their heads became typical of his art and a kind of humorous mouthpiece. As one of the most recognised post-war artists in Greece, his art can be seen in many places. At the Stathmos Larisis metro station in Athens, anyone and everyone can sit and wait for the train in the spirit of Gaïtis, on one of the funny men that he had made into chairs.
