Maximian Herculius, First reign, 286–305 AD, Aureus, Nicomedia, c. 294, MAXIMIANVS P F AVG / HERCVLI VICTORI SMN, Hercules standing left holding apples and lion skin, RIC 2, Calicó 4669, 5.40 g, very small scratches on reverse, but otherwise an outstanding specimen with full luster - extremely rare with Hercules standing left.

Maximian recieved the title 'Herculius' from Diocletian. This extremely rare type with Hercules standing left was struck at the new eastern mint in Nicomedia. The reverse shows Hercules after his eleventh labour, where he stole the apples of the Hesperides - the golden apples giving immortality.
