Anna Wengberg (b. Ystad 1865, d. Helsingborg 1936)
Portrait of a girl with a long plait and a light blue dress. Signed Anna Wengberg. Oil on canvas. 60×39 cm.
The Swedish born painter Anna Wengberg began her artistic studies already at the age of nine in her hometown Ystad, where she took drawinglessons. After a while she turned her attention to oilpaintings and in 1884 she went to Stockholm to study under the painter Edvard Perséus (1841–1890). Here she specialised in the painting of portraits before she continued her studies first in Düsseldorf under the guidance of the Swedish painter Bengt Nordenberg (1822–1902) and later on in Paris at Académie Colarossi.
During her studies in Germany Wengberg met the Finnish painter Victor Westerholm (1860–1919). He invited her to the Finnish island, Åland, where she became a part of the artist colony Önningeby. She spent four summers in Önningeby, and stayed for periods in Finland, some times for several years. This contributed to her close relation to several artists in the Finnish art community and during her life she exhibited in Sweden as well as Finland. Wengberg is represented at several Swedish museums, including The Swedish National Gallery and at The Turku Artmuseum in Finland.
