Prinsesse Augusta af Hessen-Kassel (b. Copenhagen 1823, d. s.p. 1889)

Still life with flowers in a vase on a sill. Signed and dated Au. H. 1877. Oil on canvas. 54×46 cm.

Augusta Sophie Frederikke Marie Caroline Julie of Hesse-Cassel was a German princess and a Danish baroness. She was the daughter of William X of Hesse-Cassel (1787–1867) and Princess Louise Charlotte of Denmark (1789–1864), who was the sister of Christian VIII. In 1854, Princess Augusta married Baron Carl Frederik Blixen-Finecke (1822–1873).

Augusta's sister Louise of Hesse (1817–1898), later Queen Louise of Denmark (1863–1898), and she herself were both students of the flower painter I. L. Jensen (1800–1856), of whom the present painting is a very fine testimony. Her works are very rarely seen at auction.
