Peter János Weissmüller was the son of German speaking parents, born in a part of the then Austro-Hungarian empire, now Romania. He was, however, merely one year old when the family emigrated to America, where they Americanized his name to Peter Weissmuller. Early on he started swimming and he made a revolution within the discipline of crawl by placing himself closer to the surface than contemporary swimmers were used to. In 1922, aged just 18, he made his first world record and from then on he was the star above them all for the next decade. During the 1920s he set no less than 67 world records and achieved five gold medals at the Paris Summer Olympics in 1924. Here he also won a bronze medal as part of the American water polo team. During the same era he won 52 US national championships.
