Painter unknown, 18th century
A pair of portraits of princess Wilhelmina of Denmark (1747–1820) and William I, Elector of Hesse (1743–1821). Unsigned. Oil on canvas. Each 61×50.5 cm. (2).
It has previously been suggested that the sitters are prince Charles of Hesse-Kassel (1744–1836) and his wife, princess Louise of Denmark and Norway (1750–1831). It is possible that these four royals have been mistaken for eachother through time, as Louise and Wilhelmina were sisters and Charles and William were brothers.
Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 290, 1972 no. 235.
The canvas is relined. Numerous crackles, especially on the male portrait. Minor retouches, mainly on the female portrait. Marks from the stretcher visible on the front. Peelings of varying degrees. In need of cleaning.
Please note: The item is subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Act. In the event of a hammer price of DKK 50,000 or more, including buyer’s premium, the buyer must submit a copy of a valid photo ID and proof of address in order to collect the item.
