Vilhelm Hammershøi (b. Copenhagen 1864, d. s.p. 1916)

Study of a young man. 1883. Unsigned. Charcoal on paper. Visible size 44×35 cm.

The front of the paper inscribed with pencil “Pr 2” and “bl No 21”, and with pen a date 3/1 83. Labels stamped “Antaget til Prøve” (Approved for examination) and “Antaget” (Approved). The reverse of the paper inscribed with pen “Januar kvartal (January quarter) 1883. J. Exner” and with pencil “V. Hammershøi”.

Literature: Poul Vad, “Hammershøi - Værk og liv”, 2003, p. 28. Here a portrait of a woman is reproduced, which is close in date (23/12/1882) and technique to the study of “A young man”. The inscriptions and stamps are almost identical in both drawings. It is further stated that the “Portrait of the Woman” was carried out at Holger Grønvold's studio. This is most likely also the case with the present drawing.
