Tycho Brahe (b. Skåne 1546, d. Prague 1601)

Tycho Brahe: De mundi aetherei recentioribus phaenomenis, liber secundus. [Hven: for the author, 1588]-Frankfurt: Godfrey Tampachius 1610. Later ed. 4to. Title device, allegorical device at end (in facsimile), 2 woodcuts of astronomical instruments and numerous woodcut text diagrams. Titleleaf reinforced. Coll. Title page (dated 1610) (14)+465+(2). This copy is missing last leaf NNN2, inserted in facsimile. Some leaves affected by marginal dampstaining, occasional foxing and minor soiling.

Bound in cont. half vellum.

Tycho reports the results of his research on the comet of 1577. The original sheets printed at Brahe's observatory on Hven, Uraniborg, in 1588 were (probably) used for the present edition (the first 7 leaves), as they were for the 1603 edition. They passed to Tampachius, who re-issued the work in 1610, re-setting the first two and the final quires and omitting the portrait which was printed on the title verso of the previous edition.

Literature: Dreyer: Brahe p.369; Houzeau and Lancaster 2699, Thesaurus 250. + Graesse IV, 339.

Provenance: Flemming Erik Pedersen (1931–2020).
