C. W. Eckersberg (b. Blåkrog near Aabenraa 1783, d. Copenhagen 1853)
Purchased by Nationalmuseum Stockholm in June 2017.
Standing back-turned model with her right arm lifted. Signed and dated E. 19 Juni 1833. Pencil on paper mounted on paper in the two top corners. Sheet size 22×12.4 cm. Unframed.
Indistinctly inscribed in the bottom right corner with pencil “22”, and on the reverse with pencil “Eckersberg No 21, 9” and with blue pastel “9”.
The dating is from the same date as the drawing, but the signature is applied later. Later in life Eckersberg tried to bring order into his many drawings, and on the same occasion he signed several of them. His sight and physics were weakened at this time, hence his characteristic signature E became a bit rough and slightly shaken on several of these later signed drawings.
From Eckersberg's diary, we know, that he and a number of students at the Academy (including Chr. Købke, Marstrand and Constantin Hansen) drew and painted after a nude female model in June 1833. On June 19, 1833, Eckersberg writes in his diary (in Danish): “Yesterday, as well as today from 4 pm to 6 pm, Marstrand and Constantin Hansen drew after female model.” (C. W. Eckersbergs dagbøger 1810–1837, vol. 1, 2009, p. 549). Several of these model drawings and paintings were exhibited and reproduced in the catalogue at “Den nøgne guldalder. Modelbilleder - C. W. Eckersberg og hans elever”, The Hirschsprung Collection, 1994, pp. 86–93.
This drawing has first been attributed to C. W. Eckersberg. Later it has been attributed to his son Erling Eckersberg because of its similarity to his drawing of the same model in the same position at the same day (“Den nøgne guldalder. Modelbilleder - C. W. Eckersberg og hans elever”, The Hirschsprung Collection, 1994, cat. no. 34b) and it was sold as ascribed to Erling Eckersberg at Museumsbygningen auction 18, 2001 no. 19. For stylistic reasons and because of the distinctive signature, there is no doubt that the drawing is actually done by C. W. Eckersberg himself.
