The Sung glaze was one of Axel Salto's most favourite and therefore also most used glazes. Even though the Sung glaze has its roots in the traditions of Japanese glaze, it was Patrick Nordström and Carl Halier who created the glaze at Royal Copenhagen in 1925. When Halier establishes his own workshop in 1929, he also often uses the glaze diligently in his own work. When Axel Salto starts to collaborate with Halier, he teasingly refers to the Sung glaze as “Halier’s Chinese glaze”. The distinctive nature of the glaze can be seen in its process, which emphasizes and accentuates the modelled forms and contours in an eminent way. The vase is painted with cobalt and iron-filled colour, before the glazing. In this example, the blue colour manifests itself in particular.
