Christen Købke (b. Copenhagen 1810, d. s.p. 1848)
Portrait of the painter Emmerik Høgh-Guldberg (1807–1881). Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 23.5×19.5 cm.
Købke's own repetition of the portrait at ARoS (inv. no. 483) with the same measurement. That one reproduced Hans Edvard Nørregård-Nielsen, “Christen Købke” vol I, 1996 p. 88.
In 1829, Købke received an invitation from his friend and fellow student Emmerik Høgh-Guldberg in Aarhus and spent the summer in Emmerik's childhood home there. Emmerik's talent was not as well-developed as Købke's. Only a few paintings are known by Emmerik's hand. He ended up teaching in Aarhus and as a curator at Aarhus Museum. Emmerik had hoped to be able to become an officer as his father; but gave up the idea. “However, there was a passionate hunter left in him, and the youthful face with the friendly eyes is coloured by outdoor life, as the skin of a killed marten he has tied around his cap.” Quotation from the above-mentioned book p. 111.
