Emile Bernard (b. Lille 1868, d. Paris 1941)

Portrait of the finnish painter Werner von Hausen (1870–1951). Signed E.B 1895. With dedication: “à M. Hausen”. Oil on canvas laid down on board. 45×32 cm.

Exhibited: The French Exhibition, Glyptoteket, Copenhagen. Exhibited: “Paris 1894: Finnish Artists in the Circle of Gauguin and Strindberg”, Vaasa City Museum (Tikanoja Art Museum), Finland, June-October 2017.

Werner von Hausen and Emilie Bernard were good friends and both part of the artist group around Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin in Paris during the 1880s.

After a disagreement with Gauguin, Bernard travelled with Werner von Hausen to Constantinople, Jerusalem and Cairo in 1893. The trip was sponsored by Werner von Hausen's family in Finland.

The portrait of Werner von Hausen is one of several portraits of him and his family that was made by Bernard as payment for the trip to Egypt, where he ended up living for a number of years.

Werner von Hausen was the son of Bank Director Paul Frans Wilhelm von Hausen (1830–1880) and Fanny Maria Westberg (1830–1900). The portrait was inherited by Werner's daughter, the painter Mana von Hausen, who was married to the Danish artist Ebbe Sadolin, and the painting has been in the family's possession until today.
