Paul Fischer (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. Gentofte 1934)

“Paa Højbro Plads. April”. Højbro Plads (Højbro Square) on a day in April. Signed and dated Paul Fischer 1890. Oil on canvas. 171×220 cm. Contemporary gilt frame carved with the Copenhagen city arms.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1891 no. 125. Chicago 1904. Literature: Steffen Linvald, “Københavnernes maler”, 1984 p.19. Bo Bramsen, “København, før og nu - og aldrig”, 1988, volume III p. 246 - here incorrectly attributed to Erik Henningsen. A smaller version of the painting from 1891 is reproduced in Helge Carlsen's book “Billedmageren Paul Fischer”, 1991 p. 78. Provenance: Sold at the exhibition in Chicago 1904. ABR auction 18, 1951 no. 5, reproduced p. 71, as the first painting ever by Paul Fischer to be reproduced in our catalogues. In the foreground of the impressive painting the artist's wife and daughter are seen and in the background are the ruins of Christiansborg Castle, that burned in 1884. Bissen's statue of Absalon on horseback was erected in 1902, that is why it is not included in Fischer's painting.
