Johan Thomas Lundbye (b. Kalundborg 1818, d. Bedsted 1848)
A roman woman. Unsigned. Dated Rom 12. Nov. 1845. Inscribed in Danish “unfortunately forgotten my glasses” and “56”. Watercolour and drawing ink on paper mounted on paper. Sheet size 243×180 mm.
In Rome from 3 November to 5 December 1845 Lundbye did a series of figure studies in pen or pencil and watercolour, which he called (in Danish) “Costume drawings”. Common to these costume drawings is that they are all depicting typical ordinary Italian people from Rome and the surrounding area, dressed in their characteristic original costumes.
The paper has turned slightly brown. One corner with a tear. Examined in frame.
