Magnus L. Stephensen (b. Holte 1903, d. Helsingør 1984)

Unique tobacco cabinet of Cuban mahogany mounted on frame with round legs. Body of cabinet with tambour shutter. Designed 1937. Made in 1937 by A. J. Iversen, Cabinetmakers, Copenhagen. H. 65. W. 37 cm. L. 52.

The cabinet comes with a funny story: When A. J. Iversen presented at the 1937 Paris World Exhibtion he was initially “only” awarded a Gold Medal. This was a small catastrophe for the young and very ambitious Iversen. He complained his misery to the influential editor and critic of decorative art Hakon Stephensen who managed to persuade the Jury to grant Iversen the “Grand Prix”. In gratitude Iversen gave this cabinet to Hakon Stephensen. Exhibited: “Danish Art of Cabinetmaking”, Kronborg, Elsinore. 10/13–2000 to 12/3–2000.Provenance: Peter Stephensen son of Hakon Stephensen.
