Eugene Cernan (b. Chicago 1934, d. Houston 2017)

An original NASA “Red Number” chromogenic photograph of the Moon's surface. December 1972. Comes from the Apollo 17 Mission, so far the last lunar landing made by man. December 7-December 19, 1972. NASA identification number (red) AS17–140-21357. Back marked “A Kodak Paper”. Photo size 20×25 cm. Frame size 32×42 cm.

NASA “Red Number” photographs are the photographs, which the space organization itself developed in-house immediately following a successful mission - unlike all other reproductions that were made by external photo labs and printing houses. The number of in-house “Red Number” copies - characteristic with their red serial numbers and named “A Kodak Paper” - was not registered at the time, yet it was very modest and there is generally a long span of time between the turning up of each motif on the market.

Condition

Rare. This is an original NASA “Red Number” b/w photograph from 1972, which shows normal signs of handling. Edges have yellowed.
