Johann Bauhin (b. 1541, d. 1613)

Bauhin – Cherler: Historia plantarum universalis. 3 vols. Printed Ebroduni [Yverdon-les-Bains] 1650–1651. 1st ed. Folio. Each volume has an engraved additional title page by Conrad Meyer, two flyleaves inscribed with name and motto in Latin, in ink by a previous owner (“Georgius Hannæus D”, [Jørgen Hahn, 1647–1699] - Tandem bona causa triumphat (A good cause triumphs in the end)). Illustrated with more than 3500 (692 + 1436 + 1449) small woodcut illustrations of plants in text. Some browning and spotting. Bound in cont. full vellum bindings with calligraphed title on spines. (3)

Bauhin devoted himself to botany. His great work “Historia plantarum universalis”, a compilation of all that was then known about botany, remained incomplete at his death, but was published at Yverdon in 1650–1651.
