“En jæger, som viser en lille pige sit bytte”. A hunter who shows a little girl his prey. Signed Const. Hansen. Inscribed 8/11 1832 tilf. Captain Schaper. Drawing ink on paper. Visible size 18×14.5 cm.
The hunter is Constantin Hansen's good friend and travel companion, the painter Jørgen Roed, who shows his prey to his little sister, Signe.
The drawing is done after Constantin Hansen's well known painting with the same title, which was purchased by Kunstforeningen (The Danish Art Society) to be disposed of in a lottery among members. The painting went to Captain Schaper. It is today at the Glyptotek (inv. no. MIN 1856).
Kunstforeningen had decided that (in Danish): “... the artists, who sold their work to Kunstforeningen, were obliged to carry out a drawing or etching of this work by their own hand, which laid the foundation of the great collection of Danish artists' original drawings at Kunstforeningen ....” (Kunstforeningen 1864, p. 9). This collection of drawings was sold at auction in 1933.
Constantin Hansen also made an etching based on the painting.
Provenance: “Kunstforeningens Samling af Haandtegninger”, Winkel & Magnussen auction 142, 1933 no. 265.
