A Norwegian silver-gilt bridal crown, decorated with red glass paste and loose circular, concave and leaf-shaped pendants, comprising of an undecorated base and inner top ring, seven hinged leaf-shaped sections, pierced and pricked with foliage, crown-shaped leaf points, the split pin-ends mounted with roosters of silver repoussé. Each section and base hallmarked. Maker Hartvig Jentoft Jeppesen, assayer Christen Hoff, Bergen town mark, year mark 55= 1855, month 7/M=July. Weight 700 g. H. 21.5 cm. Diam. 18/31 cm.

Bridal crowns were worn by the bride on the wedding day as a symbol of virginity. The custom started in medieval churches but continued in the Nordic countries after the Reformation in the 16th century and right up to the end of the 19th century.
