Original black-and-white press photograph of China's last emperor, Pu Yi (1906–1967), in Mao suit. Back with restriction stamp, handwritten receiving date, remnants of newspaper clipping, layout instruction (pencil) and stamped dates of newspaper publications (October 20, 1967; obituary, May 28, 1969, December 17, 1983). Oakwood frame with double glass. Visible size 21 × 15 cm. Frame size 30 × 24 cm.

Pu Yi, China's last emperor – one of the most remarkable figures in the global political landscape of the 20th century – underwent a radical change of heart under the communist regime (established in 1949). Stripped of all power, he gradually began to embrace the ideals of the People's Republic, which in later years was also reflected in the way he dressed. In 1960, encouraged by the regime, Pu Yi published his autobiography, ‘From Emperor to Citizen’.

A similar press photograph, but in poorer condition and reproduction, was sold at Bruun Rasmussen's auction 2521, catalogue number 157.
