'Pseudo Seneca'
An Italian patinated bronze bust of the Pseudo-Seneca after the antique, with polychrome inlaid eyes, later black wooden base. Naples, first half of the 19th century. H. 34 cm.
This bronze study known as the “Psuedo-Seneca” , after the Roman 1st century BC original, was excavated at Herculaneum from the site of the Villa of the Papyri in 1754. The Papyrus Villa belonged to Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, father-in-law of Julius Caesar, and was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79. The original bust is now conserved and exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
