Erik Rahr (b. Odense 1900, d. Ibiza 1962)

A large wall relief of partly painted pine. Carved with motif of “Madtrolden” (Pan of the Pot) surrounded by food and beverages. Unsigned. Made ca. 1942. L. ca. 370 cm. H. ca. 220 cm.

Provenance: Jens Udsen, hence by descent in the family. The present relief is a carved wood variant of a similar plaster edition made for Rasmussens Hotel in Faaborg, Denmark. In the Danish newspaper Fyens Tidende the relief is mentioned in the following way: “When the future visitors enter the bright entrance hall of Rasmussens Hotel in Faaborg, they will not only be greeted by the hotel porter's friendly smile and congenial personality, they will also meet the youthful figure of a golden ”Madtrold“ (Pan of the Pot) which the sculptor Erik Rahr, Tornehavehus, has created with great competence and imagination in a relief which perfectly shows the dynamic value of the 'Pan of the Pot' in the fairy tale empire of food mysteries [...] From the smoking gilded pot, the chubby being rises and throws his fork towards two flying wild ducks, even though he is surrounded by every imaginable delicacy. In a nice composition one afterwards notices roe deer, bacon pigs, beer barrel, sheaf of corn, schnapps bottle, cheese, salami, wild ducks, Danish fish species etc.” Read the full story here
