On Digte: Houghton no. 73. “...at the end of the year, he published his first ”eventyr“, the term which he used for the rest of his career to refer to the special form of folk tale which he made so famous. The ”eventyr“ appears at the end of this volume of poetry and bears the title Dødningen, et fyensk Folke-eventyr (The Spectre, a Funen Folk Tale). Andersen wrote later that this tale was based on a story he had heard as a child. A few years later he rewoked it, under the title ”The Traveling Companion,“ to give it the ”true spirit“ of his ”Eventyr." BFN 51.
