Gottfred Eickhoff (b. Frederiksberg 1902, d. Copenhagen 1982)
Study for “Guapa”. Signed Eickhoff 42. Patinated plaster. H. 71 cm. W. 18 cm.
This plaster sculpture is a study for the bronze sculpture “Guapa”, which is standing in front of Glyptoteket in Copenhagen facing Tietgensgade. With the upright, frontal figure and the simplified forms and facial features, the sculpture points back to the Egyptian and archaic in Greece, from which Eickhoff used to draw inspiration.
In addition, the title “Guapa” (Spanish: Beautiful) refers to the novel character Maria, called Guapa, in Ernest Hemingway's famous “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (1940).
Several larger repairs. Has been broken at the head, left arm and the base. Normal patina including scratches and small discolourations. Larger chip at the head and left arm.
