Axel Salto (b. Copenhagen 1889, d. Frederiksberg 1961)

Stoneware vase modelled with branches, fruits and leaves. Decorated with greyish white glaze. Signed Salto. Made at Carl Halier's studio, Københavns Stentøjsbrænderi. Designed 1930. H. 29,5 cm.

Literature: Axel Salto: “Saltos Keramik”. The model is shown unglazed together with Axel Salto and Carl Halier at Halier's studio, fig. 25.

With this vase, Salto's fascination with and interest in Chinese traditions within porcelain decoration is reflected in a subtle way. The modelled branches with scattered flowers and fruit-like ornaments are especially beautiful when they as here are combined with the characteristic white, slightly cracked glaze. This naturalistic depiction of the nature motif is further developed by Salto in a similar way to how the fluted style was developed during his time at Carl Halier's studio from 1929–1930.
