Anna and Fritz Syberg had a successful sale of their paintings and watercolours to Fåborg Museum and Den Frie in 1910. Having dreamt of living in Italy for a longer period, they decided to spend the money on a long stay there and set off with their 6 children to Italy, where they lived in Pisa until 1914. During their stay they painted only watercolours. The present portrait was done during their stay in Pisa.
