Under the base an exhibition label from 1931.

The young Helen Ree, who descended from a wealthy family with several sculptors in their social circles, began her artistic education at an early age, taking drawing lessons in 1921 from Charlotte Sode and Julie Meldahl, and with Agnes Jensen from 1922 to 1924. Already as a 17-year old she became a student of the sculptor, Anne Marie Carl Nielsen, who at the time was working on an equestrian statue of The Danish King Christian 9th for Christiansborg, and this changed her focus from drawing and painting to sculpture. She had her debut at The Charlottenborg Exhibition in 1927 as Helen Schou, after having married Holger Høiriis Schou the previous year. From 1929 to 1932 she studied sculpting at Kunstakademiet (The Royal Academy of Art) in Copenhagen under E. Utzon-Frank. Throughout her entire career Schou was particularly preoccupied with the rendering of the horse, and supported the work with anatomical studies, participating in dissections at the Vetenarian School, just as she studied equestrian statues on her numerous travels around Europe.

These monumental equestrian statues and vivid horse sculptures with tremendous powerful muscles are the core of her oeuvre, but she also created other animal sculptures, including masterful renderings of cranes after a study tour in Uganda. Furthermore she has produced numerous statues and portraits throughout the years, just as she has a large body of prints in her production. Through time she has held several posts in artistic institutions, amongst others as a board member of Dansk Skulpturforening and as a member of Akademirådet. Schou carried out great public sculpture groups and exhibited regularly until the 1950'es when the large public monuments took up most of her time. A large retrospective exhibition, Helen Schou - Monumenternes Kvinde, is currently showed at Randers Kunstmuseum.
