The Battle of Kwajalein and Roi-Namur - today belonging to the Republic of the Marshall Islands - was fought as part of the Pacific Campaign of World War II. It took place from January 31 – February 3, 1944 and saw fierce fighting and extreme resistance spirit and self-sacrifice from the Japanese side, which from the begínning was inferior to the American striking power. However, the Japanese kept fighting - and thus dying - and eventually only 51 out of 3,500 Japanese soldiers were left to surrender. The two highest ranking Japanese officers took their own lives to avoid the humiliation of captivity.
