Ejler Bille (b. Odder 1910, d. Ørby 2004)

Composition with figures, recto et verso. Signed E. Bille 1942. Oil on canvas. 75×67 cm.

Usually, we associate CoBrA with the year 1948, when the movement was officially founded. However, this does not change the fact that both Asger Jorn, Egill Jacobsen and Carl-Henning Pedersen all began their work with the spontaneous, expressive painting style many years earlier. In this double composition from 1942, Bille demonstrates his virtuosic mastery of a strong palette, which he uses to conjure up a pulsating life in the numerous ornaments and figures that are already a part of his universe. The composition bears a great resemblance to several of the works in Anna and Kresten Krestensen's collection, which is on display in the Museum of Modern Art Aalborg's permanent collection.
