Ferdinand Verbiest 1623-1688, after

“Kun Yu Quan Tu” - Great Universal Geographic Map, a handcoloured xylograph depicting the Western and the Eastern hemisphere, each printed in three sheets and mounted on two panels. This map was most probably reprinted in Canton and is dated Xianfeng Gengshen - 1860. Each panel c. 175×80 cm. Each sheet c. 161×52 cm.

The original map was made by the jesuit Ferdinand Verbiest in 1674. He came to China in 1658 and served Kangxi as the emperor's teacher of science. Only two of the original maps exist today in Taiwan and China. The work has been reprinted on a few occassions in both China and Korea, but are considered rare. Provenance: Danish private collection established in China during the 19th century.
