'Fist of God'. An original b/w gelatin silver press photograph of a nuclear test on Marshall Islands in the Western Pacific in 1952. Back with handwritten note, 'Fist of God, Marshall Islands, 1952'. Double glazing. Visible size 19.5×25 cm. Frame size 26×31 cm.
Between 1946 and 1958, the United States conducted 67 nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. 23 of these tests were made at Bikini Atoll, and 44 near Enewetak Atoll, but fallout spread throughout the Marshall Islands. In 1946 French designer Louis Réard (1896–1984) adopted the name 'Bikini' for his new two-piece swimsuit, taking inspiration from the Pacific atoll, which was to be ruined during the following years.
This is an original b/w gelatin-silver press photograph from 1952, which shows a yellowed front and back. Furthermore minor tear in the left side as well as minor spots. Signs of handling.
