Carl Gustaf Pilo, school of, 18th century

Portrait of Queen Louise of Denmark (1724–1751), seated pose, wearing jewelry and medal, large dress and ermine robe in which the Queen's crown rests. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 125×102. Later frame with crown.

Queen Louise, née Princess of Great Britain, was married to King Frederik V of Denmark. They became parents to, among others, King Christian VII and Landgrave Louise of Hesse-Kassel. The latter married Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel. They became parents to, among others, Duchess Louise of Glücksburg, g.m. Duke Wilhelm of Glücksburg. They became parents to, among others, Duke Carl of Glücksburg, Duke Friedrich of Glücksburg, Duchess Friederikke of Anhalt-Bernburg and King Christian IX of Denmark. Thus Queen Louise was the great-grandmother of this latter group of children.

Carl Gustav Pilo painted several official portraits of Queen Louise and his workshop helped to meet the need for more works, for example donated as gifts. The present portrait seems to have been modeled on Pilo's portrait of the Queen wearing her anointing robe, which is dated to around 1747 and is owned by the Danish National Art Gallery.
