Antonio Frilli (b. c. 1860, d. Florence 1920)

An Italian bronze sculpture, David copy after Donatello (c. 1386–1466). The base signed 'Antonio Frilli C. S.A. Firenze'. Late 19th century. H. 160 cm.

Provenance: The Danish architect Niels Jacobsen (1865–1935) who was highly inspired by his tours to Italy. He brought home this figure from Florence to Odense, Funen, where he had his architect studio. He is the architect behind several buildings such as Odense Courthouse, Odense Theatre, schools, hotels and The Hans Christian Andersen Museum.

The Florentine renaissance artist Donatello made his first version of the sculpture of the biblical hero David in marble and as a clothed figure (1408–09), and later in 1430 a far more famous bronze nude figure. Both are now in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence.
