Sold at the “Neugebauer rug sale” at Winkel & Magnussen, 9th of december 1939 in Copenhagen. Depicted in the auction catalogue page 7, lot. 22. Literature: Depicted in R. Dr. Rudolph Neugebauer was a railroad construction engineer and a collector and scholar of Oriental carpets. He was the author of several high respected books on carpet and built a fine collection. R. Neugebauer died in the early 20th century and left the collection to his son, Otto Neugebauer. In 1931 O. Neugebauer founded the review journal “Zentralblatt für Mathematik und ihre Grenzgebiete” . When Hitler became chancellor in 1933, Neugebauer was asked to sign an oath of loyalty to the new government, but he refused and was promptly suspended from employment. In 1934, he joined the University of Copenhagen as full professor of mathematics. In 1939, after the Zentralblatt was taken over by the Nazis, he moved to the United States after selling the carpet collection in Copenhagen. A few of the rugs from the “Neugebauer sale/collection” was bought by the Danish museum of arts & crafts and are still in there possession. Literature: Yanni Petsopoulos. Kilims, 1979.
