Høstudstillingen was formed in 1932 by naturalist painters such as Knud Agger, Flemming Bergsøe, Harald Leth and Mogens Zieler. The aim was to create an exhibition community outside the established institutions, and in 1934 the group was named “Høstudstillingen”. Originally they focused on figurative and naturalistic painting. In 1936, Høstudstillingen merged with the artists' association Corner, which created the “Corner & Høstudstillingen” and led to greater artistic diversity. Later, abstract artists such as Else Alfelt, Henry Heerup and Carl-Henning Pedersen joined, influenced by avant-garde movements such as surrealism and abstraction. This created tension, and in 1942 several naturalist artists left the group.

After 1942, Høstudstillingen became a center for experimental and abstract art in Denmark which continued until its dissolution in 1949. After the disbandment in 1949, Høstudstillingen had its last exhibition in 1950, where Carl-Henning Pedersen was the only artist who had works exhibited. The exhibition were called “Eventyrets Maleri - Høstudstillingen”. Despite barely two decades, Høstudstillingen has had a great influence on Danish modernism and the avant-garde, especially through artists such as Carl-Henning Pedersen, Henry Heerup and members of the Cobra movement.
