James Smith verge pocket watch in gilt brass pair cases, outer case coated with green shagreen/leather, white dial with Roman numerals and outer 5-minutes Arabic numerals, signed “John Smither, Bramley, Surry”, gilt movement signed Jas Smith London, No 11277. Inner case with maker WB. England c. 1770. Case diam. 38/46 mm.
Presumably the dial is signed with the owner's name and place. It was not uncommon to commission a watch with the owner's name during the 18th century.
Provenance: Private collection
The watch works, but we do not guarantee for the functionality. Dial centre with minimal chip. Slightly askew stem, repair/reinforcement on the inside of the case. Key included.
