On October 1, 1946, the International Military Tribunal - representing the United States, Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union - delivered its verdicts concerning the main accused 22 Third Reich leaders in the German city of Nuremberg (Nürnberg). The most famous of the accused were, some would argue, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring (1893–1946), Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess (1894–1987) and the dictator’s favourite, Armaments Minister Albert Speer (1905–1981). The latter was later quoted as saying: 'If Hitler had had a friend, it would have been me'.
