The Boxer rebellion in China

The Boxer Rebellion in China: The telegraphist Valdemar Thygesen's album, containing more than 150 photographs from Beijing, China c. 1900–1902. The collection contains numerous images from Beijing's streets, The Emperor's Palaces, various temples, Coal Hill, The Ming Grave Roads, portraits of two major figures in the Boxer Rebellion: Dong Fuxiang and Li Hongzhang. The collection also includes photographs of the ruins of Beijing after the siege of the Boxer Rebellion; a series of photographs from a public execution of rebels before and after they were beheaded and a series of photographs of the ceremonious return of Emperor Guangxu to Beijing lead by the Empress Dowager Cixi in January 1902. Vintage gelatin silver prints in various sizes mounted in contemporary album, largest image 23,5×20 cm, smallest image 7×10 cm.

The images in this collection of photographs were obtained by the Danish telegraphist Valdemar Thygesen (1879–1902) during his stay in Beijing, China around the Boxer Rebellion (c. 1901–1902) where he worked for the Danish telegraph company in China, Det Store Nordiske Telegraf-Selskab. In this album Valdemar Thygesen has collected private photographs of him and his colleagues at the Telegraph Station in Beijing and his visits to the sights around Beijing, including the Emperor's Palaces, The Ming Graves, The Great Wall. The collection also documents events in the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion and the siege of Beijing including the execution of rebels and the return of Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guanxu to Beijing in 1902 as well as a couple of portraits of the Boxer leader Dong Fuxiang and the intermediary in the conflict Li Hongzhang. Valdemar Thygesen died of smallpox in Beijing in November 1902.
