A large set of 17 matching Danish Régence chairs of various sizes, partly gilded oak and beechwood, comprising a pair of armchairs, five with low backs, six with high backs and a set of four, each with padded and upholstered back and seat, the top rail and the seat rail centred by a carved shell motif flanked by foliage. Mid-18th century. (17)

Provenance: Avening Court, Gloucestershire.
The set of four chairs are known from the first Christiansborg Castle in Copenhagen and are today on display at Frederiksborg-Museum of National History and at the National Museum of Denmark. These are stamped with Christian VI's crowned monogram, dated 1740 and 'KSCB' for the Royal Palace Christiansborg (Kongelige Slot Christiansborg). Literature: Chr.
