A rare sash badge in the form of the Royal Portuguese “Order of Christ”, cross-shaped pendant, set with 22 flat-cut garnets, in between as well as in the hinged rosette-formed suspension ring several old-cut diamonds, mounted in 9k and 18k gold and silver. Second half-18th century. H. 4.2 cm.
“The Order of Christ” is originally a Knight Templar order, which was founded in the early 14th century and approved by Pope John XXII in 1319. In 1550 the order was reconstituted in Portugal and associated with the Portugese crown.
