Exhibited: The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, “L. O. Pasternak Memorial Exhibition”, 1958 no. 87.Provenance: The still-life was presented as a gift to Ms. Signe Anne Elisabeth Peters (later Lunden) in 1922. This is verified by an inscription in German lower right. The painting stayed with her until her death. It was included in the inventory on the 22nd of February 1982, which was drawn up by Gösta Öhrnberg, Stockholms Auktionsverk. After the still-life was sold in 1982 it remained with the buyer until now.Leonid Pasternak was a very versatile painter. He excelled in genre-scenes, landscapes and still-life as well as portraiture. His contribution to the development of illustrations in books was also significant, the most important of his works being the illustrations for Tolstoy's novel “Voskresenie” (Resurrection). The writer and artist were friends and Pasternak illustrated most of Lev Tolstoy's and his family's works.In 1894 he painted the piece “The Day before the Exam”, which received the Gold Medal at the International Art Fair in Munich (the work is now in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris). From 1894–1918 Pasternak was Professor at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1905 he received the title of Academician of Painting.In 1921 he moved to Berlin together with his two daughters. His sons, Boris (later to become a famous writer) and Alexander (later an architect) stayed in Russia.In 1927 and 1932 substantial exhibitions of Pasternak's works were held and in 1932 a monograph by M. Osborn including 150 illustrations of the artist's works was published.After the Nazis came to power in Germany, Pasternak, being a Jew, was prohibited from painting. He entered into negotiations with the Soviet authorities about returning to the USSR, but in 1938 he went into exile in England where from 1939 onwards he lived with his daughters in Oxford until his death. “Still-life with Roses” belongs to the artist's Berlin-period and outstandingly demonstrat
