As a voluntary soldier during the Three Year War (1848–1850) F.C. Lund portrayed various peasants he met around the country in the sketchbook he brought with him. After the war he was encouraged to complete his drawings and supported by both private and public sources resulting in the publication of 31 color lithographs in 1864.
