Kaare Klint (b. Frederiksberg 1888, d. Copenhagen 1954)

“The Red Chair”. A set of six chairs with profiled Cuban mahogany frame. Seat and back upholstered with original, patinated Niger leather, fitted with brass nails. Model 3758. Designed 1927. These examples made late 1920s - early 1930s by Rud. Rasmussen Cabinetmakers/Rud. Rasmussens Fabrik for Egetræsmøbler, with maker's paper label. (6)

Proveniens: Torunn Gulliksen Ihlemann and Jens Thygesen, former Kunsthallen, Copenhagen.

Two chairs with Rud. Rasmussen Cabinetmakers label (one no. 18081 and the other indistinct), four chairs with label from Rud. Rasmussens fabrik for Egetræsmøbler.

Literature: Gorm Harkær, Klintiana: “Kaare Klint”, vol. 2, ill. and mentioned pp. 82–84.

This model was designed for the lecture hall at The Museum of Arts and Crafts (now Designmuseum Denmark). At this time, one could buy 200 chairs for the same price of one chair today. “It is called ”The Red Chair“ because the Niger leather upholstery was dyed in a reddish tone. In addition to the different sizes, there are variations in upholstery and other minor details. The chair's simple expression is not surprising today, but among the chairs of the time it was unique.”
