Awarded to Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu (1852 – 1932), a Danish naval officer who travelled to Siam in 1874. He soon became one of the closest advisors to the king and was highly involved in the introduction of electricity and railways. He was appointed both admiral and minister of the Navy, and was active in the Franco-Siamese war in 1893. From 1900–1901 he functioned as the only foreign born Commander in Chief of the royal Siamese Army ever. Following attacks of malaria he returned to Denmark in 1902 where he right until his death in 1932 experienced considerable success in both business and politics.
