A Russian monumental icon, important scenery depicting “Jesus's Entry into Jerusalem”. Behind Christ, His disciples follow, usually headed by Peter and John – both Apostles being described as “pillars of the Church” by the Fathers. The end of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week is heralded by Palm Sunday, which remembers the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey (Matthew 21:1–11). This is a key event in Christ’s ministry, as well as being celebrated since antiquity. Tempera on wood panel with “Kovcheg”. Early 18th century. Rare shape. 71×35 cm.
