The sailor's name was Jens Fisker and he was presumably working as a model at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Christen Købke (1810–1848) painted him twice, and he was presumably also painted by P. C. Skovgaard (1817–1875) (Ludvigsen, vol. II p. 32).
