The Experimental Art School, known as “Eks-skolen”, was founded in 1961 by artist Poul Gernes and art historian Troels Andersen. Later, Richard Winther, Roger Martyn Pring, Ole Schwalbe, and Jens Jørgen Thorsen joined the school. Eks-skolen was a groundbreaking institution in Danish art history, operating in Copenhagen from 1961 to 1969. The school was established with the aim of challenging traditional art education and instead creating an environment where experimentation and free artistic expression could thrive. In contrast to more conservative art schools, the Experimental Art School emphasized process over product, with no fixed curricula or censorship. Students were encouraged to explore new materials, techniques, and forms of expression - collective creation and collaboration were seen as central to the learning process. The school’s approach was deeply rooted in the contemporary avant-garde movements and was critical towards societal norms and expectations. The school's philosophy emphasized that true artistic growth stemmed from experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students were encouraged to dismantle the distinctions between various artistic disciplines. The institution also aimed to dissolve the traditional hierarchy between teacher and student, adopting an open admissions policy that welcomed both established artists and novices, provided they possessed a deep passion for art. The Experimental Art School played a crucial role in the development of the Danish art scene in the 1960s and 1970s many of its students and teachers later became key figures in Danish art. The school's radical pedagogy and its focus on experimental practice have had a lasting impact on art education in Denmark, and its spirit lives on in the many artistic initiatives that have emerged following its closure.
