Niels Laurits Høyen (1798–1870) was a leading Danish art historian who had a great influence on the Danish Golden Age art and on Danish art history in the 19th century. In continuation of the bourgeois, national-liberal movement in Denmark and the nationalistic mood in Europe at the time, Høyen sought to cultivate national ideas through the depiction of historic buildings as well as landscapes and folklife, as in the present painting of Roskilde Cathedral. The church appears as a monumental national memorial with towers reaching into the sky.

Jens Peter Munk, “Jørgen Roed. Ungdomsarbejder“ (Works from his Youth), 2013 pp. 154–169. Here Jørgen Roed’s works depicting Roskilde Cathedral are mentioned. In his architectural paintings, Roed managed to “create a perfect balance between on the one hand a correct formal depiction of space and volume and on the other hand a degree of historic-national content. What's more: Roed found a genre that at once allowed him to unleash both his practical prowess and patriotic sensibility. He could find an outlet for his joy of telling stories in genre-like sub-themes and with this resonance in the background, he could condense great architectural form with a sure use of colour and control of light as his mediating tools” (p. 169).
